Bluff collapse at Grandview

Fox 5:
The cliff failure at Grandview Surf Beach in the Leucadia neighborhood of Encinitas occurred shortly before 3 p.m., just north of a lifeguard station that was staffed at the time, according to officials in the northern San Diego County city.

Emergency personnel pulled five people out of the resulting mound of rock and soil, Encinitas Fire Chief Mike Stein told reporters.

One of the victims, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others were taken to hospitals, two in critical condition and one with minor trauma, Stein said. One other was treated at the scene for superficial injuries.

  1. A cubic yard of dirt weighs approximately 2700 pounds. The picture shows at least ten yards. Moving a X amount of speed, you stand no chance. Lesson? NEVER sit near the base of a cliff. Blacks Beach, Del Mar, Sunset Cliffs and parts of Encinitas beaches are all death zones. Think the worst and you will be fine.

  2. Good point- 9:07.

On that note, the City and everyone else knows the N. Coast Hwy 101 is a huge hazard and its just a matter of a short time until another person is run down and its absolutely does not need to be this way.

When will the City stop this senseless bleeding?

When will the City start construction on the needed streetscape to address this known hazard?

    1. 10:25 - beyond inappropriate to beat your streetscape drum here. To say the least. You people just don't know when to stop.

    2. The bluff has nothing to do with streetscape.

    3. I agree with 11:37. The two are completely different.

One is just the natural erosion of native sandstone as bluffs slowly retreat as they have done for many thousands of years, which unfortunately may pose an infrequent risk to people.

The other is a bad design created and supported by some humans that risks human lives every day, and has an approved solution ready to save lives.

      Totally different.

  4. Time to enforce a mandatory set-back from the bluff edge for beachgoers.

  5. It is really important to remind your kids and visitors that the bluffs are constantly eroding. If the tide is high, they can still find sand at Moonlight and Cardiff Reef. Such a sad weekend for Leucadia and a very loved local family.

    1. Yes, you 4:53 are spot on. In general, people are stupid. They haven't a clue what can happen. They die all the time doing things they shouldn't. Take the Grand Canyon for example. Tourists die every year in the canyon from heat or taking pictures of themselves on a rock outcropping and following to their death. As dumb as the day is long. For the local beach cliffs, how many decades have people been warned of the dangers. I say stop warning them, what's the point?

  6. What are the lifeguards currently doing to warn beach goers? Nothing.
