  1. Were lifeguards on duty?

  2. Lifeguards were busy warning people about obvious things the people already knew.

  3. As we all knew that $5 million dollar lump of concrete, metal and glass in the surf zone at Moonlight does nothing to actually promote safety at the beach.

The Ca Coastal Commission, Surfriders Foundation, and the City Council fail us big time. When can that hazard be removed to make the beach beautiful and more sustainable?

  4. Let me see if I understand this. In the minds of these written responses, it's the life guards fault this guy died???
Or, the fault of the lifeguard station?
No wonder this country is in trouble.

  5. Written responses have minds? Really?

The job of the lifeguards is to see danger before or while it's happening and to stop or minimize the bad consequences.

If the lifeguards were on duty when this young guy got into trouble in the water, they failed at their job in the worst way possible.

  6. Welp, you got me there. Indeed a response doesn't have a mind. It should have read, in the minds of the numbskulls making responses "It's the life guards fault"?
Or, the fact a building and concrete slab doesn't promote safety?
How can building promote safety. You see numbskull, two can play at this.

    1. How about responding to the point rather than dwelling on some other poster's mistakes?

    1. By now we’ve all heard that he went in at Swamis and ended up at D St two days later. I hope all who posted hate on our Lifeguards feel shame for the posts, which were based on assumptions that turned out to be false.

  8. The tower is a hazard in the surf zone, a huge waste of money and pollution on our beach.

  9. The tower has all those spots to plug in laptops, so whatever staff is on duty is playing on a computor verses watching how people are fairing. Sad.

  10. Oh sure. The lifeguards are “playing on their computers...” Have you spent five minutes as a beach lifeguard? And since when are lifeguards responsible for EVERYTHING that happens at the beach. Ever consider it was after hours? Or perhaps the guy (RIP) was outside lifeguards’ view? You ought to try lifeguarding before you are so quick to blame.

    1. It occurred during a regular lifeguard shift. The surfer was within visual proximity. Just facts - draw your own conclusion.

    2. I recall there also being a statement that the body appeared to have been in the water for a substantial amount of time. So lets add to the above facts. During a regular shift, within visual proximity and *potentially* went unnoticed for a substantial amount of time (hours?). If true, failure at the local and leadership level that should have consequences.

  11. I lifeguard all the time when I'm at the beach. Sit on the beach and watch to make sure the kids are safe. Pretty easy and fun! and I do it for free.

  12. Authorities have identified a surfer whose body was found floating offshore from Moonlight State Beach as 26-year-old Gabriel Reed.

Reed was found shortly before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the ocean off the coast of Encinitas, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. A city of residence was not listed for him.

Lifeguards spotted a surfboard floating in the ocean and responded to the area, but found Reed prone and unresponsive in the water, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Lifeguards took him to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

A ruling on Reed’s cause of death was pending, the Medical Examiner’s Office reported.
