The City and/or Coastal Commission will not allow property owners to erect walls or bluff skirts to slow erosion. And they take no action to keep beach goers from sitting directly under these fragile bluff faces. This apparently occurred during a high tide, so there was a scarcity of people on the beach. Had it happened at a different time, there could have been casualties. There should be a 10 to 15 foot safety zone away from the bluff edge, where lounging is not allowed. Looking at this collapse, even that probably would have been inadequate. The City needs to develop a safety plan now.
The worst thing you can do is have ice plant on top of the soils.

The genius' on the coastal commission and city of encinitas need to take a trip down to Ocean Beach, south of the pier to educate themselves.
The Coastal Commission is a joke. Their idea is to let erosion and collapses proceed, except in the area where hotels are erected or billionaires reside. In San Clemente, they deposited 11,000 tons of boulders adjacent to the shelf where the railroad tracks run, but the CC won't allow any property owner from doing the same. A bluff property owner in Leucadia was told he'd have to remove his retaining wall in 20 years - absurd! SurfRiders are part of the anti-protection league, erroneously claiming the beach sand comes from the bluff erosion. It actually came from the inland rivers, that flowed to the sea. Harbors and breaker barriers have stopped the sand from its normal pattern of deposition; the sand now accumulates further out beyond the surf zone, so it doesn't replenish the beaches by tidal action.
ReplyDeleteThe likelihood of more accidents is high, as these bluffs will continue to collapse and the numbers of people on the beach increase. The CC and the City watch and don't do a thing.
If you go down and observe, the substrate just above the area where the collapsed was, is very fragile sandstone. It is actually beginning to "flow", like and sand timer. This creates concave depressions, that further destabilizes the upper surfaces of the bluff. This is an on-going dilemma, with few, if any, resolutions at this point for that location.

ReplyDeleteWhile your at it, open of the rivermouths by removing the Hwy101 and railroad dikes. If they need to cross the rivermouths, they should be over a bridge the whole width of the rivermouth floodplain. Remove the dikes and the beach sand will return.

Mayor chose to have it at an elite confined area instead of an open area like our Community Center or other large outdoor venues.
She promotes homelessness and does nothing to help it. She welcomes a parking lot on the E3 property and then slams it next to a school without any community input because the Rich Liechtag bleeding hearts, that enjoy all that money made in the pharma business, said they did not want it on their property after one year. Hmmm - not sure about how great that is, but thats another story.
