Coaster Rail-to-Trail Project:
The San Diego Coaster train is at a major crossroads due to the requirement that the train be moved off a 2 mile stretch of track on the Del Mar bluffs that are unstable due to accelerating cliff erosion. The proposed rerouting of the train via a tunnel under Del Mar is a massive multibillion dollar risk that is unwarranted given the train's small ridership and the disruptive transportation technologies that are set to make the train even more obsolete in the near future.
Alternatively, a repurposing of the underutilized rail line into a greenbelt/walk/bike trail is a major sustainability opportunity that has numerous co-benefits that include clean & local commuting, healthier living, greater flexibility in dealing with future sea level rise, substantially lower costs and potential development opportunities to address critical issues like affordable housing and community reinvestment.
Get rid of the Coaster - no loss.
ReplyDeleteWhat?? Isn't that part of the micro modality mobility and motility movement, aka the "Four Fabulous Farces?"
DeleteCourtesy of Norby n' Blakespear.
No more Amtrak and freight trains?
ReplyDeleteit's important to have rail service for north county as we aim to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate catastrophic climate change - i think removing the rail line entirely is a mistake and we should focus on making it resilient to climate change impacts
ReplyDeleteResilient! Compassionate! Did you get your speech from the mayor's PR dude?
Delete1:31...great dry humor...love it. Sarcasm is the best laughter possible. Did Larry David write this?
DeleteOh' please gawd, let the train continue. That way, the clowns who moved near the tracks can continue crying about the train whistle.
ReplyDeleteJust spitballing here
ReplyDeleteMaybe the enc city council can have their next closed to the public meeting on the tracks during train rush hour.
That could potentially improve the future of encinitas by orders of magnitude.
What say you defiant L's?
please get rid of the train so that i can focus on complaining about e-bikes...
ReplyDeleteI gotta say, there is is no shortage of town idiots when reading comments like 7:24 and 8:24. They apparently can not understand the graph or referenced report.
ReplyDeleteEveryone else should be alarmed at the. huge waste of tax dollars spent on an environmentally damaging Coaster. Very-low ridership, diesel burning locomotive trains pulling a few passengers up and down the precious coastline while spewing diesel, dust, and other toxins on the adjacent school children and neighboring communities.
Stop the pollution and waste. Stop the Coaster.
The coaster has killed many and has harmed the lungs of our youngest citizens at their schools.
ReplyDeleteits time to stop the coaster and make it a thing of the past.
Isn't Tony Kranz our representative for North County Transit? Even as ridership is down and they keep losing money, Tony spoke on behalf of a pay spike for this guy. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/communities/north-county/oceanside/story/2019-11-22/transit-district-boss-to-get-boost-to-323-125-salary#:~:text=OCEANSIDE%20%E2%80%94%20The%20North%20County%20Transit%20District%20board,latest%20information%20posted%20on%20the%20website%20Transparent%20California.
ReplyDeleteIts soooo embracing that Tony is from Leucadia. He forgoes a nice rail trail and put up shitty parking lot with people parking trailers and boats and dumping garbage, where Cardiff has as a beautiful pathway. Then he caps it off with fencing access to our coastline.
ReplyDeleteDo not even get me started on how fucking loud it is in Encinitas do to trains going from 6 a day to over 50 a day and plans to go over 100 per day. Errrrr! Cancer for all especially our kids.
This guy is a turd. The only thing I can guess is that he like the donuts at NCTD so he is willing to give a raise to a CEO of a dysfunctional NCTD to make $360k per year and pension for life. Ummmmm DONUTS!......
- Lord help us.
