City reducing Vulcan parking even as it adds big new apartment complexes

CBS 8:
Several people in Encinitas are frustrated that parking will go from parking your car head-in to parallel parking which they say will create 300 less parking spots next to the beach and restaurants. Construction zone signs are posted for a mile from Leucadia Blvd along North Vulcan Avenue to La Costa.

Encinitas residents Sara Mertz and her husband Mike Brawner said they are disappointed they weren't able to provide public input before city officials started to reconfigure parking spaces.

"I would say don’t eliminate 300 parking spaces along Vulcan Avenue. It's ridiculous," Mertz said. "There is no parking spaces at all in southern California! People want to go to the beach! It’s going to hurt restaurants owners and people who live on this street."

  1. Huge issues at play here. Gift of public lands. That city area should be a nice pestrian trail to safely get children from the densely developed and families with many children and and essential jobs that don’t pay that great from their Apartments to school safely.

Circumventing CEQA, when City paid for a new parking lot to be built, which changed formally pervious earth areas to impervious areas thereby leading to a dramatic, increase in flooding along that highway corridor.

The gift of public funds to the adjacent private property owners needs to be addressed. Why isn’t someone being charged for that parking opportunity and the reduction of space for pedestrian needs?

When was this project brought to the city Council?

I live in Vulcan Ave and I never got notice or heard about the proposed changes.

So many questions, and no answers to date from our stinky Mayor Tony Kranz. What is a resident to do?

When will I be compensated for the loss of walking area by the city putting in the impervious parking lot which caused further problems for the city?

  2. CBS8 killed it.

Thank you for covering this huge issue that the city was trying to bury. Sorry inquiring residence want to know what is going on in their neighborhood and why can’t people have a safe place to walk on the street to get from their apartment to the school without getting run over?

The city talks about safety, but yet they can’t even put this item on the city council agenda yet?

I can’t wait to see this one come to city council in the next meeting. What’s the plan Mayor Kranz?

  3. We now have cars parked 1/2 in the dirt and 1/2 on the street.

Yes there is a new dirt trail. Sloped and not very walkable.

Bikes are now forced into the double death of door-zone and riding in the middle of the street.

Parked cars are now at risk of getting doored too.

    Win for walkers
    Win for bikers
    Win for motor vehicles
    Huge win for sign makers!

The only one who lost anything is Bobby in the bushes.

    1. Let’s see a report on that. More like:

      Loss for walkers
      Loss for bikers
      Loss for motor vehicles
      Huge win for sign makers!
Huge loss for those impacted by increased runoff in the Corridor, floods, and the cost of drainage improvements to get rid of the increased runoff.

And Bobby in the bushes loses too.

  4. Starvie!!!! Help!!!!!

I have CBS 8 calling me!!!!!!

    Sweet darling,

Please CALL ME!!! I NEED YOU.

Residents are calling sounding really pissed off and I’m afraid to see them out in public. Now news reporters are calling. What am I supposed to say?

I know we had a fun weekend and got totally diverted, but I need big-time help . I forwarded you all my emails, I got the read receipts, so I know you received them. Please tell me what to do. Please Starvie call me…. I am freaking out and I’ve eaten four boxes of donuts.

Oh shit there’s a news reporter at my door… eeeek!

  5. Imagine the poor young reporter they send out to do a story on head in vs parallel parking. What other stories do they get sent on? 30 acre parking lot on the public dime within proper Public and CEQA review for the benefit of the adjacent developer/apartment is coming back to bite Kranz.

She should have allowed the rail trail to proceed in that area for the public good similar to Cardiff without directing otherwise. Now she is screwed!

Public records requests are flying and attorneys are retained. Major lawsuits, payouts, settlements and possibly criminal charges all to follow?

  10. Starvie, thanks for the visit. You always know how to relax me. 🤭

I’m still stuck though, should I screw the young kids and the mothers in those apartments that have no safe place to walk and have to walk along sketchy Vulcan Avenue in the vehicle lanes with no ADA Access for a little Timmy? There’s a lot of those families and a lot of them aren’t really rich, and some may even vote.

Or should I screw the adjacent apartment owners who I gifted the parking lot to and the associated developers?

Oh, now that I write that it becomes obvious. My bad duhh, the gifted property owners and developers provide contributions for my campaigns, and Christmas is coming up…

Thanks for helping Starvie. You always have a way of clearing my mind. Thank you sweetie and see you on Saturday!

  11. Basically Kranz is bought and paid for by the developers. Anyone who hasn't figured this out yet, is not paying attention. How do you think he got elected in the first place. You can blame Garvin and Julie, but the BIA is the one who gave him the money to run and win 49% of the vote. Don't be fooled again. This is the man who had the first meeting of Prop. A at his home. Now he wants to build mega buildings. Why is this? The answer is noit

    ReplyDelete
  12. 12:36 again. My computer published before I was done. He wants to build mega buildings because the BIA wants him to. Forget affordable housing. There is no such thing in Encinitas. Everyone knows that. So why did he sell out. Why don't we fight like lot of cities in the State are doing?

    1. No city is successfully fighting the state's housing laws.

    2. * no city is in compliance with state law, for a reason.

Just because the BIA owned politicians say it, doesn’t mean it is true or right. All these state laws do are mandate gentrification, proof is in reality. Affordable housing laws divorced from minimum wage are immoral. CEQA was powerful because it worked and based on the very settled science that development is the worst thing for the environment. Gutting CEQA to “save” the environment is MAGA stupid. More segregation and more Marco Mansions is all we end up with. Great for developers and property tax dollar hungry cities, shit for affordable housing and the environment. Anywho, enjoy you heatstroke on your 15 minute walk. Don’t forget the inhaler and keep your head on a swivel, much more likely to be hit by a car or assaulted in a urban environment. On a positive note, road bikers are fucking off to rancho Santa Fe. Speaking of RSF, all homeless should be dropped there. They don’t continue squat shit to the housing or homeless problems. Time to bring the problem to their front door.

    3. Kranz won because he’s an incumbent and a Democrat, the race was saturated with candidates, Julie and Garvin helped him with whisper campaigns and promoting Jeff Morris. He didn’t raise much money and was already enthralled to the developers and special interests.

He’s lazy and happy to let staff, Garvin or non profits do the work or solve our problems for him. He’s not an ideologue but neither does he have an original thought in his head or a back bone.

He’ll get away with what he can and most likely will. There’s no political will in the state to do what’s right for its cities, or residents unless it’s taxable and buildable.

Tony Kranz is perfect as far as the state is concerned: goes along with their schemes without question. Without a spine, he has no moral obligation, unless it suits their purpose.

  18. Tony Kranz is perfect as far as the state is concerned: goes along with their schemes without question. Without a spine, he has no moral compass, much like Blakespear, Gonzalez, Hinze, Lyndes, Blackwell (mostly), Antil and quite a few city employees. Zero moral compass. Many would sell their family members out to an experimental biologic as long as they capture hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. These people are the nihilists to the umpteenth degree. They are literally and figuratively the definition of malevolent.

Honestly, the way that I saw the last election go down I would not be surprised if the big time developers on the national level have been paying starvin to come in and sway the city council weak minded vote. Who has the weakest mind of all? That’s right, the town dunce who has already proven, he will take trips to Israel at the developers request, and then vote accordingly.

  29. Kranz and the other council members are literally the worst ever. Aside from Bruce they're all corrupt developer puppets. They only care about their fauxgressive agenda and filling their own pockets. Their votes are paid for by developers and non-profits and they still get their orders from Queen Blakespear. They're woke agenda is destroying Encinitas and they vote against the interests of the residents every single time.

Bruce is the only good councilmember, we need 4 more like him to save this city. Every council member and staff other than Bruce needs to be fired because they're all morons. Bruce is the only one on the side of residents and will always vote to protect us.

Now here's the conundrum y'all. If both of those statements are true, why does Bruce vote with the woke majority nearly 100% of the time? Why did Bruce vote to reject the appeal of this apartment monstrosity? There's a couple obvious conclusions to be drawn from this paradox.

The first conclusion is that in all likelihood, every one of the council members attempts to do what they believe is best for the city and its residents. That difficult task includes navigating various laws to avoid expensive unwinnable lawsuits or worse.

The second conclusion is that since the complainers deliberately ignore this paradox and ignore Bruce being part of the 5-0 nearly 100% of the time...it was never about the votes. What it's really always been about is the culture war, partisan politics and the hatred by some of all things progressive. If only there was a label for the majority of these people and their cognitive dissonance. Some commonality in their beliefs to describe them. It's on the tip of my tongue...

    2. You don’t have to be a Republican to hate the phony, damaging, woke, virtue signaling this council practices. They’re a bunch of hypocrites. For example, let’s ban straws and plastic bags while our dirty water from years of redirected flooding in Leucadia flows into our oceans, or building excessive dense housing communities and limiting parking access, preaching we shouldn’t drive cars, but creating more pollution by added traffic, because guess what, everyone and the tourists we need, drive cars. There are tons more examples.

Besides, this is the laziest, most incompetent follow the leader council since Blakespear. No critical thinking and no pushback against bad planning or decisions. They’re happy to go along with destroying the character and the environment and some may even be benefitting. What I wouldn’t give to see that proved!

Bruce isn’t the hero his worshipping crowd believes him to be. Nonetheless, he’s a far superior leader and thinker than any of them could ever wish to be. It’s problematic when any politician is put on a pedestal, whether it’s Ehlers or Blakespear. They should all be judged without partisanship and by a very high standard.
