Coast Highway 101 restaurants and other Encinitas eateries that were allowed to build temporary outdoor dining areas on public roadways and private parking lots during the COVID-19 pandemic can keep them for at least another two years, and probably permanently, the Encinitas City Council decided Wednesday, Dec. 20.
The council voted 4-1, with Councilmember Bruce Ehlers opposed, to continue allowing the outdoor eating areas on a temporary basis until July 1, 2026, and directed city employees to craft an ordinance that would make these temporary areas permanent. Also, city employees were asked to put together a fee system, so the city can soon start charging rent for the ones that have been built on parking spots in the public road right-of-way.

Next complete fiasco was not maintaining the storm drain on Lake Drive, which led to a complete failure of the road and a wash out of hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of sediment into the lagoon. The city spent tens of millions to repair the failed roadway and storm drain that resulted from negligence. But the city haven’t even begun to address the failed storm drain from Lake Drive all the way down to Lagoon. Millions and millions of dollars not addressed in the cities budget. Another multi million dollar lawsuit surely pending.
Stupid is what stupid does- the mayor continues to open a second community centers that is not necessary, or wanted by the majority of the voters, all while the city’s roads are literally crumbling. Why didn’t the mayor and city council put the second community center to vote of the people?
I know why- Because it only benefits less than 100 people and it cost the taxpayers greatly everyday in ongoing operations and maintenance cost in perpetuity. All for the stupidest mayor in the history of Encinitas to get her name on a plaque.
The Mayor needs to be recalled ASAP and the city manager fired ASAP.

Whenever this latest family is demanding from the city. The city should give them. $5 or $10 million is going to be a lot less expensive than a full blown suit. The city is always wrong.

DeleteInteresting that the city calls it, a sinkhole. I don’t think this was a sinkhole. It was known unmaintained storm drain that caused a problem and massive erosion.
The unmaintained storm drain resulted in a repair costing millions and millions of dollars and massive erosion and sedimentation into the lagoon.
What an unnecessary tragedy all because of lack of maintenance from the city.

The same thing is happening with the roads. Completely irresponsible lack of maintenance that will cost the taxpayers, many more millions that it needs to have it been properly maintained.
Why would Encinitas choose to open a second community center just for a few people that requires paying millions and millions in operations and maintenance costs when it’s not even maintaining its current infrastructure?

Agree that these questions of where taxpayer money should be used for all citizens should not be left to appointees of previous Mayor Blakespear - Allison Blackwell, Kellie Hinze, and Joy Lyndes and continued with now Mayor Tony Kranz. Getting tired of broken roads, narrowed vehicle lanes (not wide enough for trucks and barely wide for large cars) and streets that were two lanes that are now only 1 lane. Don't vote for these 4 on council.
