Council threatens to appoint itself a supermajority

Coast News:
My perspective is that I hope that we can appoint somebody,” said Hinze. “It’s cheaper and happens quicker, so let’s find a consensus candidate, somebody we can all agree would be right for the seat.”

During a Stay Classy San Diego podcast interview before the election, Kranz said he favored appointing a replacement to the vacant District 1 seat.

[...]

In contrast to the other three council members, Ehlers said that he would likely not favor an appointment, maintaining that a special election better reflects the will of city residents.

“I want the people to select the incumbent, not the council to select the incumbent,” Ehlers said. “I’m in firm opposition to appointing incumbents. This council has three (appointments) up there already, and we see the problems that this causes with what I call the ‘unanimously wrong’ council.

“The appointment gives an undeserved advantage in the next election cycle with the power of incumbency. Name recognition and notoriety is big, and I don’t think it’s fair to anoint one person who is aligned with the majority on the council over another person who is aligned with the majority of people. And the result of this happening repeatedly is what we have now — you get people all from one side in a supermajority, and they’re out of sync with the people.”

  1. Expect the worst. 47% of you voted for it. Dalakranz.

When you elect the town dunce you everyone can guess the outcome. Pure failure and devastation for Encinitas. Jack asses like John Gjata and Kathy Lees as well as newbies Mali and Garvin are responsible and we will never forget.

Of course Dalakranz his clown council will appoint the worst of the worst. Encinitas is already doomed to failure for the next two years. It keeps getting worse. First BIA, now town dunce Dalakranz…..

New order of worst mayors in the history of Encinitas:

    1. Dalakranz
    2. BIA

Brett Farrow? WTF? no more support for you. Fool!

Unbelievable freaking losers - all of you that had Kranz signs up should be absolutely ashamed of yourself and you are the reason why Encinitas is being destroyed by developers.

You all suck and Dalakranz sucks. Karma can not come quick enough.

  3. I see the City has created yet another death zone for bicyclists on southbound Coast Hwy 101 from Phoebe Street to Leucadia Boulevard.

I swear is Kranz literally trying to kill bicyclists and bankrupt the City?

I heard the public testimony from experienced bicycle club members warning the City not to do this and even their own commission did not approve the design, yet Kranz and Hinze voted to approve it. You do not stripe a narrow bike lane between a high speed vehicle lane and parking right in the door-zone. Everyone knows that apparently except Kranz and the other Encinitas clowns.

Now when the first person on that stretch get hurt or god forbid dies, you have blood directly on your hands and tens of million tax dollars out to pay for the lawsuit settlements that could have been used to fix Vulcan Avenue.

You knew it and you did it anyway. That is evil negligence.

Where can I sign that recall?

  4. At the mayor's outgoing extravaganza last week Mali Woods-Drake featured prominently, the most dramatic climax of the night left for her to perform when she gave the mayor the key to the city.

Many comments were made in general about how the replacement should "represent future residents of Encinitas." Mali's claimed that she represents the future of Encinitas and said get on board or get out of the way. So current taxpayers footing her parasitic bill can just stfu and have a seat.

So my guess is Mali Woods-Drake, bellicose and rank newcomer to Encinitas politics who managed to work into her remarks a fabricated history of her time here, protesting too much to justify her place at the mayor's right hand. Watch Garvin to mastermind Tony's remarks of support for her appointment.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was there and that is not true. Mali did NOT present the mayor with the key to the city and she didn't feature any more prominently than any other attendee that wanted to share their remarks.

I am not defending Mali, but I am getting really tired of innuendo and rumor on ALL SIDES that leads to misinformation and false narratives.

    2. Mali has been at Blakespear’s right hand at the last two state of the city addresses, somehow got appointed to the position of VP of the Pacific View School Board, was “handpicked” by the mayor to voice the most disgusting, ignorant, and racist opinions on the equity committee, and spoke on Wednesday of the mayor’s “mentorship.”

Bullshit she isn’t “featured more prominently,” she is the heir apparent predetermined pick for the vacated D1 seat and folks had better wake up to her. She stands for infiltration, not representation.

    - Dr. Worley death -$22,000,000
    - Stephanie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hYU0pceCSY
    $8,000,000?
    - South Coast Hwy settlements - ?
-Now North Coast Hwy settlements - ?

Encinitas is bankrupt thanks to Kranz.

    ReplyDelete
  6. But God forbid they spend $200, 000 on an election for D1 to replace Kranz who didn’t have the balls to finish out his CC term before for Mayor. The Mayor position is 2 years. He says that already sitting CC members as well as Mayor have no advantage over candidates that aren’t already on the Council so let’s vote on the new council member. If Mali is the new Encinitas, we’re screwed no matter how old someone is. The only reason she can afford to live here is she married an OC firefighter. Their Union endorsed Gunderson. Maybe she should go to the Orange Curtain and fight with them over her BS stuff.

You all think you are so much better than her (and me), but she’s beating the shit out of you. Why? Because she’s a fighter and you’re not. I am throwing my support behind Mali.“

  8. According to our General Plan: The City Council has the ability to appoint a new councilperson for Kranz's seat, and it also may have a special election, according to our General Plan:
"The city’s municipal code says that “in the case of a vacancy on the City Council, for any reason, the council shall fill the vacancy by appointment,” meaning the council would vote for a new District 1 representative. Three of the five current sitting council members — Joy Lyndes, Kellie Hinze and Joe Mosca — were appointed to their seats by Blakespear and the council.
However, if Kranz’s seat is not filled within 60 days of its vacancy, the council may call a special election."

  9. I say special election. And when Kranz says it costs too much I say BS. He quoted a figure of $200,000. Hell take it out of SANDAG nefarious budget.

  10. A few years ago, the residents of a city in this state fired their entire city council, lock stock and barrel. Have we come to this?

Could appointing Mali to represent Leucadia, spark this same fire here? I recall thinking at the time that I was quite impressed at the passion of a community's residents that was able to achieve this drastic change.

If it was me, I would include sweeping the planning dept. out too. Imagine us being able to clean house like they did.

If our council appoints another compliant seat filler and doesn't give us the choice to vote, they all should be relegated to the dust bin and fired, lock, stock, and barrel. This crap needs to stop. So much for an imagined democracy in our not so special anymore town.

Council do the right thing for change.

I throw out an easy number of a major door zone injury within one month. Hopefully not a fatality but serious enough to be a lawsuit and settlement.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Keeping the two southbound traffic lanes for the four blocks from Phoebe to Leucadia Blvd is acknowledging that the traffic backs up from the Leuc Blvd light. Problem is it often backs up much farther than four blocks. With one southbound lane north of Phoebe, the backups will be twice as long as with two lanes. When the traffic is heavy, drivers will be idling and creeping along for many maddening minutes.

Tony's claim to fame is his father was football coach at San Dieguito High. He is not a college grad, that I am aware of/ not that is always a sign of intelligence, but it does mean someone spent time trying to obtain some knowledge beyond high school. Tony's first attempt to run for CC failed. His second attempt was supported by developers because they knew Tony would do their bidding. This can all be documented by the way. The problem is the person who could definitely document it, won't. Can't imagine why except after seeing what this blog did to Lorri for 2 different posts, I can sort of see it. The new Leucadia bike lane death trap sucks. I'm sure we will hear all the sirens and read about the injuries soon.

How many tens of millions do you expect to be paid out in the next 10 years? Maybe $100,000,000? maybe up to $200,000,000?

    - Roberta's near death- $11,000,000
    - Dr. Worley death -$22,000,000
    - Stephanie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hYU0pceCSY
    $8,000,000?
    - South Coast Hwy settlements - ?
-Now North Coast Hwy settlements - ?

Encinitas is bankrupt thanks to the Dunce.

    2. Let’s recall Thunder saying how her D1 seat was the most critical in this recent election.

Wrong! It was the mayor’s seat Julie. Now we have Tony, who you secretly supported, and a guaranteed appointment to replace him.

Oh and Julie, the mayor drives the agenda. Do you think election reform, local control, fiscal accountability and more law enforcement will be foremost on Tony’s mind? Nice try loser.

Thanks to you Garvin and the Morrises we’ve got Kranz, more Leucadia project approvals and a homeless shelter coming our way.

    4. Garvin’s is a right wing extremist who fancies himself an intellectual. He desperately wants relevance and, having run through established residents who were revolted by his support of Kranz, has a found friendly welcome with the E4E crowd. Thunder is following him there. Morris followed him there, having recently declared his support for Mali Woods Drake. Go figure.

    13. It’s the alliances Julie made last year that cost Encinitas this election and got Kranz elected.

Reading between the lines, a local reporter read this blog last week, and decided to do a story about how important our local train is to the US military.

So in other words, our own tRain Man’s annoying, incessant, and redundant posting here led to the best PR story our local rail line has had in years.

After reading this, only someone against America who hates the troops could be against rail service.

    3. So weird. I would have expected a more factual and balanced article from San Diego Tribune. IDK, maybe the reporter was not feeling well and had COVID. Regardless, I hope he is feeling better and reaches out to informed people on the subject on his next article.

This article is deeply flawed for many reasons:

#1-It has no specific statistics on the usage of the train tracks that run in San Diego County and up to Camp Pendleton because the usage is almost non-existent. In the LAist article link below, a spokesman for Camp Pendleton said the recent rail closure because of the bluff slide in San Clemente had "little to no impact" because almost all of its equipment is moved via trucks and the roads.
      https://laist.com/news/transportation/south-orange-county-train-travel-suspended-climate-emergency

#2 Many countries, including the US, regularly use roads and tractor trailers to transport heavy equipment.
      https://corsia.us/all-you-wanted-to-know-about-shipping-a-tank
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_transporter

#3 At a recent Del Mar City Council meeting discussing aspects of the 2-mile tunnel, they are specifically talking about trying to minimize the tunnel diameter to reduce costs to construct. This limits the ability to ship oversized equipment through the tunnel. The article below talks about this exact problem with many of the train tunnels in Switzerland.
      https://aw.my.games/en/news/general/transporting-tanks

#4. The design of the tunnel doesn't really matter for the military because the military uses the tracks minimally and the military can easily use tractor trailers and the roads. The giant port of Long Beach is only 75 miles from Camp Pendleton and the port of San Diego is only about 20 miles from Miramar. These are not long distances. Rail is much more appropriate and better suited for moving goods long distances, not short distances.

#5 The military argument is being promoted by SANDAG and its supporters because the data on passenger usage and freight is so low for these tracks. SANDAG regularly states that more than "$1 billion of goods" in freight is moved annually on these tracks, the 350-mile "LOSSAN rail corridor". This is misinformation and an intentional effort to deceive the public. According to the federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), the total annual movement of freight in the state of California is about $2.3 trillion, meaning the $1 billion translates to just 0.04% of freight movement in the state. Yet they want taxpayers and voters to spend billions of dollars based on this deeply deceptive claim. And with advances in electric vehicles /trucks and self-driving technology, the capacity of freight movement on the roads is set to get dramatically cleaner and larger in the future. (i.e. autonomous trucks making deliveries on the highways during non-peak and night hours). You can see the BTS data at the following link:
      https://data.bts.gov/stories/s/Moving-Goods-in-the-United-States/bcyt-rqmu/#shipments-by-state

These thoughts represent my own views and do not represent those of Del Mar City Council.

Dan Quirk, Del Mar City Council Member

      Delete
    4. I will repeat my idea of about a week ago. Since SANDAG is in love with rail and big money projects, let them build a 2nd heavy duty rail line inland from the coast. Perhaps along the I-15 corridor. The 15 goes right by the back door of Camp Pendleton, you could run the rail line there to the border and hook into the existing rail network in South County.

The fact that San Diego is dependent on one rail line that is built on geologically unstable ground along the coast is dumb. As far as a source of funding take the money from the train to no where (California High Speed Rail), and put it towards a rail line that will actually get used.

"Erosion from waves, coupled with urban runoff, chews away at San Diego’s coastal bluffs at a rate of six inches a year on average, according to local researchers".
That's 40 feet (!) in 80 years. And SANDAG accomplished... nothing. We believe we can somehow influence climate change with expensive projects, but we have shown to be unable to even reroute a few miles of railroad. That project should have started 20 years ago.

  46. Yes, I fully concur.

In addition to the primary focus of the article - the economic vitality of our crucial existing rail connection to the counties of Los Angeles and Long Beach -

" . . . When data for the Port of Los Angeles is combined with the Port of Long Beach, the two ports handled 31% of all containerized international waterborne trade in the U.S. . . . "

    - it should also be important to note that this inept agency, we call SANDAG, is now finally waking up. Rather than paying needed attention to our crumbling (literally speaking) transportation systems, they seem to be distracted by costly projects such as their infamous Bikeway project that has taken years to implement, which is still not complete, but nearing about half a billion dollars (yes, Billion, with a B) for 72 miles of bikeways (mostly just painted lines over existing streets).

Now, the same project (bikeway) manager is heading up the $300M tunnel design (to be clear, $300M for just the design, no construction) to route off the crumbling coast. God help us all.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Thunder has her own agenda and sold out to get elected. Obviously her plan failed. Because of her relationship with the Morrises she didn’t get elected. Because of her meddling in the election, Cremona didn’t win either. Now we’ve got Lyndes and Kranz and an isolated Ehlers. Why did she all of a sudden start outwardly supporting Kranz (as did Walsh and Kim Morris) last year? Or at least until it looked too obvious and had people questioning why you would.

Why did she insist it was only two seats that had to be overturned? Though she said she wasn’t endorsing anyone, she aligned herself with Ehlers.

Why did she claim she really wanted to run for mayor and was mad at Cremona for doing so?
