New bike lanes from Kook to Swami’s

Fox 5:
Local surfers are frustrated with the idea of altering an area that always struggles with parking.

“What they’ve done is they’ve kind of made a war on surfers. You’re going to see a lot of guys really upset,” said Paul Ambrogio, a longtime Swami’s surfer.

The bike lanes can seem complicated and it may take some time for people to get use to the new system. For example, FOX 5 witnessed a driver driving in the protected biking lane.

  1. Tony says not to worry, if the new layout doesn't work we can always change it. I know this guy hasn't worked a day in his life and has been given everything (including the house he lives in) but does he really think money grows on trees? The guy is a serious problem.

  3. As shown by Ehlers, the only responsible City Council member, the city’s roads are crumbling, and the city’s storm drains are completely rusted and failing needing tens of millions of dollars of attention now.

What does the Town Dunce do?

    1. Focuses on building a second community center/how much parking lot so that his artsy farts he friends can do art and not have to travel a pile to the east. This action loan will cost $450,000 just to initiate service and cost $20 million to construct and will require two full-time employees and will be a continual. I’m going huge cost for the city to be tan right next to the beach.

    2. Completely blows, hot air of June’s butt and all the other residence of north Leucadia and approve high density apartments with failing road infrastructure and no safe walking or biking infrastructure on La Costa Ave and Vulcan Avenue.

    3. Supports highering 10 new full time employees (FTEs) which will burn another $2,000,000 budget per year for senseless jobs ranging from another lifeguard lieutenant ( funny they call themselves that🤣) to climate and housing plan paper pushers. This shows Kranz and the City Manager are owned by the Gonzalez- Fletcher Powerful City Employees Union which is focused on more pay and pension for less work.

    3. No construction funding for the quietzone and removing Tony’s fence that the courts said was illegal.

    4. Seems focused on putting in ridiculous bike lanes that will get the city suit for all of the harm cost to the poor bicyclist in their families. $11 million for Roberta Walker being mowed down in a high-speed Cheryl, and like currently exists on S. Coast Highway in Cardiff, likely > $50 million for the liability tied to Dr. Worley’s death RIP. And all the future pain, suffering and settlement payouts in the millions for the future that’s how long Augusta Highway south of swamis and near Leucadia Boulevard.

No wonder we have no money for projects, the well- traveled gift excepting Dunce is all about wasting money on employees and not needed projects.

The budget hearing also shows the current city manager needs to go. As recession, Louis, every other city in California is looking to trim City staff however, Encinitas is announcing its intention to increase staff FTE over the next unforeseeable years.

Absolutely irresponsible and pathetic. The Dunce is worse than BIA.

  4. I have never seen so many signs all in one place at one time. Just at the entrance to Swami's there's at least a dozen. By the way, great sign placement of the sign on the south side of the Swami's entrance...placing it right in the center of the walking path? What could possibly go wrong? My god it's like the city get's off on getting sued.

    1. I just hope I’m not the one that gets someone killed.

Seriously, cyclists and pedestrians are not the only ones worried. Getting in and out of the San Elijo parking lot was tricky enough, but now there are potentially 5 directions of cars, pedestrians and cyclists to navigate through to visit the beach.

Tony remaining willfully obtuse will not make it better in 6 months or pay for the next lawsuit.

  15. More bad news- https://fox5sandiego.com/news/california-news/amtrak-metrolink-service-cleared-to-resume-after-landslide/

Can’t wait for that polluting commuter train to stop all together or be a real line to I 15 where it should be… quit wasting millions and millions on temporary repairs for eight out of date polluting diesel burning railroad on the beach. Completely stupid.

    There’s a better path forward-

There is a lot of misinformation and spin about the train's utility. For the amount of money, land, and attention the Coaster and train tracks require, it actually does very little.

The Coaster compared to the other train lines in the County as well as the adjacent highways shows that of the 5 rail lines in the county, the Coaster has the lowest ridership by far, at only 5,196 daily weekday boardings. By contrast, the Blue Line Trolley has 56,230 daily riders. The Coaster accounts for just 1/25th of total rail volume in the county. What makes the Coaster numbers even worse is the length of the line at 41 miles. It is by far the longest of the 5 routes. Logic would indicate a longer line should carry more riders, but the Coaster does not. For comparison, the 15.4 mile Blue Line moves 3,651 people per day per mile. The Coaster moves only 127 people per weekday per mile, making it among the worst performing trains in the country.

For another comparison, the nearby I-5 highway (from downtown to Oceanside) moves about 1.2 million people per day, or over 400 million per year, over 400 times more people than the Coaster. Annual growth in trips for the I-5 is around 1%, translating to around 10,000 additional daily riders each year. With the current I-5 expansion projects and future efficiencies gained from driver assist and autonomous vehicle technology, it is possible the I-5 accommodates more than 1 billion annual trips by the year 2050. Even if the Coaster miraculously doubles its ridership to 2 or 3 million over the next 20 years, it will still be insignificant compared to the future volumes and annual growth on the I-5.

The Dunce and Hinze need to wake up and get SANDAG and NCTD going in the right direction. Kranz continually votes with the City of San Diego and gives all of Encinitas Transnet funding to the City of San Diego.

June- should be pretty upset about this considering you’re asking for improvements for a Quiet Zone, la Costa Avenue and Vulcan Avenue. Tony gives all of that funding to the City of San Diego.

I rode the bike trail yesterday, it's nice and smooth, unlike many of our other roads.

The jury is out as to how the hi-speed cyclists will use the road.

      What is scary:
E-Bikes going both ways at 20+ mph, so close together.
Tailgating and longboards overhang into the northbound lane.
Signs, riders must be constantly aware, or else risk head knocks.
If you ride the route North, it pretty much unceremoniously ends, with no good way to cross 101.

  28. Common Matt Diehl - This is what you have to say about the low performing problem riddled NCTD/LOSSAN rail line?!

"NCTD began its Coaster commuter service between Oceanside and San Diego in the 1990s. The number of daily trains steadily increased until the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, and riders are slowly returning. Amtrak passenger trains and BNSF freight trains also use the route."

Why would you use that BS NCTD soundbite ?

Matt Tucker has his head in the Ballast.

More like ridership is anemic and peaked in 2015 and has gone down as shown over and over again in NCTD's own audit reports.

Try inserting some facts in to your stories. You can reference facts from Dan Quirk who is very knowledgable on the topic.

Even before the pandemic, Coaster ridership numbers were very low and in multi-year decline, with many trains running nearly empty.

The coronavirus crisis caused rider volumes to plunge an additional 90%+, making for an even more dire financial and future outlook.

Rail freight volume is miniscule, accounting for only 0.5% of total freight volume in San Diego County. The other 99%+ of freight occurs on the highways.

The train creates serious conflict and many social negatives including accidents, noise, barriers, trenches, and fences that block coastal access and lead to divided cities and poor urban design.

Erosion of the bluffs could cause catastrophic failure. Rerouting the tracks is not practical because it would cost billions and create serious environmental problems.

California's high speed rail project has encountered significant problems, leading to tens of billions in added cost and years to the projected timeline. It's a cautionary tale.

Technology advances in autonomous electric vehicles, ride-hailing, and solar energy are set to substantially change transportation in the future, creating dynamic and personalized mass transit on the roads and highways, further limiting benefits from fixed line rail.

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has inspired many successful rail conversion projects across the nation. A trail here could be remarkable and create billions of dollars in increased economic value.

We request that SANDAG conduct an analysis that compares the tracks vs. the trail concept, both today and in light of coming technology changes. The analysis should look at both the 41-mile Coaster run within San Diego County and the longer 350-mile Amtrak Surfliner line that runs from San Diego to San Luis Obispo.

    https://coaster-rail-to-trail.org

    And then there is this:

Like transit agencies across the nation, rail and bus systems in California are in a precarious situation.

Budget problems have some on the precipice of a “fiscal cliff” and facing “doomsday cuts,” according to officials.

The rhetoric may seem overwrought, but these are not necessarily idle threats to get more money. Revenue is short and ridership has yet to recover from the coronavirus pandemic — and it may never.

Earlier this month, Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed concern about the fiscal plight of transit agencies, but then added, “We’re just not in a position to solve their short-term needs at the moment.”

    https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/columnists/story/2023-05-28/column-transit-agencies-facing-fiscal-cliff-see-no-relief-from-newsom

A woman who died after being struck by a train in the Bay Park neighborhood last week has been identified by authorities.

According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, 44-year-old Cherie Crick was walking on the east side of the eastbound railroad tracks, north of the Clairemont Drive Trolley Station, when the collision occurred around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

4 arrested at DUI checkpoint in Chula Vista
Authorities say the engineer of a COASTER train saw the woman and honked the train’s horn before applying the brakes. Despite his efforts to gain the attention of the woman and prevent collision, the COASTER struck Crick who was then thrown by the train.

A 911 call was placed and emergency services personnel were dispatched to the scene, which was in the 2700 block of Morena Boulevard, said the medical examiner’s office.

Upon their arrival, paramedics contacted the woman who authorities say was unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple blunt force injuries.

    4. Do ebike riders young and old think they can blow through stop signs and red lights and never look left or right when turning? Yep. You think you're entitled since Blakespear and Kranz announced "this is a biking town."

You know who wants full prosecution? Conscientious drivers do for ebike riders who don't think the rules apply.

    5. Bikes can get tickets just like drivers.

You’re not a cop, so don’t fucking worry about it.,

If a bicycle gets hit by school gets severely hurt or killed. Big difference than driving around a weapon.

Catch a clue returning your keys.

      Delete
    6. But they don't get tickets in reality, do they. I'm a car driver and I do worry about it because some jerk will think they can come after me for an accident they caused. Do I care what happens to someone who doesn't care about anyone else on the road? Ummmm....NO. If they lose to a car they have themselves to thank. How about you catch a clue and let the rules of the road apply to you. You sound like a repeat offender.

  35. FYI. The city, through the 2 water providers, are tracking your internet activity through Tyler Technologies online payment software. The new system will not allow you to opt out of cookies and the tyler policy clearly states they data mine and track your internet data and even location. If you are wondering why the new system seems so out of date, that is why. All old online accounts must be re-logged into and accept cookies to pay your bill, even if on auto pay before. The new “updated” system is the same as the old but now implements data mining/tracking so they force you to re-log in so they can get your data with the new system.

Time to FIOA the water dorks and city sleaze to figure out just how much spying is being done.

For those in the back…. The city can simple ask their payment processor for all your internet activity and personal info they mined from your nrowser and apps. For example, when the city was railroading Surfing Madonna they could have built an entire profile of the parties involved using their browsing history, app useage, IP address finger print etc. Similar to what Cambridge Analytics did but they have data on every single home in Encinitas that correlates names with IP addresses, names with browsing history, everything.

I suggest calling in your payment for now and if you are not cyber security literate stay off the city and water district pages.

    2. Pay by phone doesn't work either. Submit payment button online is covered by the allow data mining and personal info button with no option to opt put. Autopay cancelation was never notified and then a phone call today saying bill is past due tomorrow. This is a government phishing scam. The website was supposedly updated but the only thing that changed was phishing backend, everything else is the sa,e as before.

  36. With all the motorized bikes on the road it would be wise to get a dash cam to protect yourself and others if an accident happens.

That goes for your driving behavior too, but more importantly you will be able to provide evidence of who screwed up if it ever happens. The proliferation of motorized bikes on our roads ridden by kids of all ages needs come along with education and licensing before venturing out on the roads.

What motorized vehicle on our roads does not require a license? Every e-bike on the road. This is so shortsighted, and for parents with young kids? Please do them right and make sure they are properly trained just as a drivers license requires before you let them out on their own. These bikes need to be licensed as much for the kids themselves as for car drivers on the road.

    1. I don’t agree. A bicycle at most weighs 120 pounds at rarely causes death wanna collides into something.

A vehicle on the other hand is well over 1000 pounds. most over 2000 pounds. When drivers of vehicles collide with things, there’s big damage and sometimes injury and death.

Or during that term when she was APPOINTED, not elected mayor for a hot minute. Nearly half the residents of this city weren't even alive the roughly 40 years ago she lived here and this occurred. All of this is beside the point that she has lived in Del Mar for decades yet spends all her time sticking her nose in Encinitas business while bitching about people that don't live in Del Mar doing the same over there. Heck she's even pulled this same thing here, trying to call out long time and CURRENT Encinitas residents that don't buy her bullshit. If you're trying to keep up there's a word for this, hypocrisy.

  41. Elections have consequences. What do you you think happens, when you elect The Town Dunce as Mayor?... Well....

A now-under-construction project that’s adding protected bike lanes and changing the parking along South Coast Highway 101 is generating lots of complaints, with people contending that it’s unsafe.

“I’m actually afraid to bike it because those bike lanes have been narrowed,” Encinitas cyclist Elena Thompson, a real estate agent, told the City Council last week.

Cardiff resident Greg LaFave said he thought the entire project, particularly the parking changes, were going to keep the city attorney very busy.

“Reverse diagonal parking may work in crowded, slow, urban settings, but you’re inviting calamity, injury and lawsuits by installing these out on a moderate speed thoroughfare,” he told the council.

Thompson and LaFave are not the only ones with concerns and complaints. Mayor Tony Kranz said the city has received “quite a few emails and feedback” about the construction activity.

A woman power-walking on the nearby sidewalk shouted to the reporter, “It’s awful” as she looked over the construction project and shook her head.

Fence building Tony is F'cking up this town and is going to bankrupt us.

Tony Kranz must resign today. The City Council needs to hold a special meeting and demand that The Dunce resign immediately. He is mentally unfit to serve.

  42. We sure payed a lot of money for some paint, a few rubber curb mats, and some signage.

Money that could have been spend fixing the streets. Instead studies were funded, plans made, etc. A whole bunch of staff time taken up for the pursuit of recreation. I guess nobody needs to work in Encinitas.

The only unsafe thing about this newfangled bike lanes is the roads signs ready to split your head open

    1. Not true. The northbound class Ii bike lane is extremely narrow and pinch between guard rail, parking, and fast vehicle lanes.

The class IV cycle track is very narrow, and they will be head on collisions.

Very bad design. that’s why the experience bicyclist do not like it, and the city attorney will be very busy because of it and the taxpayers will lose millions again.

Pain and suffering will occur because of the dunce. Many more court cases, and many more in millions being paid out of tax dollars that could’ve gone to pavement or other projects..
