Food for thought

A national publication (the Daily Beast is the web site that bought Newsweek) makes many of the same points, admittedly more eloquently, that Alex Fidel has been making in his mayoral campaign about the militarization of police.

We saw a deputy sheriff in a quiet neighborhood in Encinitas in full body armor today. It was only a few years ago that local police and sheriffs didn't look like combat troops occupying Iraq.

UPDATE: A few commentaries from the Inbox: LA Times cartoon and HBO's John Oliver.

  5. Bush/Cheney are war criminals who got away with it and left this country stained like no other. There are a couple of countries in europe that they cannot go into because they have standing indictments for all they did while chasing oil revenues. If Iraq didn't have oil we would never have been dragged into that morass and would have kept attention on the real perpetrators of 9/11. Own it.

    1. 6:54 Wrong- The USA isn't benefiting from Iraq Oil, you have been fed a lie by the propagandist media.

By the way- where do you stand on Keystone, seeing how you are for energy independence and all

or are you one of those nazi's that is going to come knock on my door and take away my car keys and give me a bike like a peasant instead- all in the name of government knowns best of course

    2. Keystone has nothing to do with energy independence. It is big oil trying to get cheaper shale oil to the gulf to sell overseas and make higher profits. I

    3. 12:53- Classic- the same people who wrongly claim Iraq was about oil- and scream we need energy independence, are the same idiots who oppose keystone that would help maker America- energy independent

By they way- Keystone is about oil from sand, the shale oil you are thinking of is in North Dakota- just an FYI

oh ps- the rail that currently moves the oil from Alberta to teh gulf at a higher cost is owned by crony insider Warren I'm on the Inside Buffett

see how it works- I do

    4. If you want dirty shale oil from Canada, vote for Keystone. There is no such thing as Energy independence, unless the U.S. stops using all oil. The oil market is a world market, it's all interconnected.

  6. A week ago I saw a sheriff by K St with full Rambo garb, a bunch of locals were commenting how out of place and bizarre, especially in laid back Encinitas. Guy was a scene to behold, over the top. Alex Fidel is on to something.

  7. What did Powell say before we broke up Bush and Hussain's Iraq?

If you break it you will own it.

Now Obama and all who come after him will continue to own it.

  10. I experienced this bully and intimidate militarized police in Encinitas abotu12 months. I was at a coffee place and in walked soliders who looked like they had just left the Green Zone in Iraq. They wore military green pants, with combat boots, they had on military flak jackets, loaded with gear, they wore sunglasses to hide their eyes. They walked about menacingly and air of superiority. Many residents were in fear- myself included. When they left a pseron told us that was the new uniform for Sherriff's deputies. Sure enough, Sherriff was written down the arm of the sweatshirt.

Compare that with our CHP who comes in to the coffee shop regularly- he is wearing the tan uniform with a side utility belt. He has a bright badge, a nice belt, and friendly, yet professional, smile.

One uniform is to protect and serve, another uniform is to bully and intimidate.

  13. So its been 2 years since Dalakranz and Shaffer have been in office or have been running for office promising change. How is change going?

    1. Did they put in place a good City Manager?
    2. Did they get Prop A correct and remain open to the citizens?
    3. Did they get the bar issue under control and right?
    4. Did they get Density bonus under control?
    5. Did they straighten out City Hall?
    6. Did they get PV right?
    7. What good did Strategic Planning and what is this City Long Range Financial Plan look like anyway?
    8. How are we going to pay for the huge operational expenses in perpetuity?
    9. How are we going to pay for the identified new PV art center when we have shot our load of DEBT on overpaying for yet another piece of property and are spending $4 million dollars on a life guard tower?

    2. It is my opinion Marco is a tool of the development industry and social engineering provided it puts money in his pockets- I reached this opinion as he sued taxpayers in La Jolla for some 250K and taxpayer got crap. He also sued taxpayers over the Cleveland Forest- Marco got paid, taxpayers got crap. Then there is Marco proposing clear cutting and impacting wetlands at Desert Rose- in the name of profits-

I'll not be writing in Marco

  15. It kills me to admit this, but Alex is right on this issue. His characterization and slander of our local police is wrong, but the militarization is a problem.

  16. People thought it "cute" when DOD supplied police and military did drills labeled "zombie apocalypse". Theories surmise it is cover for local population control. given a natural disaster or economic collapse. If an 8+ point earthquake levels infrastructure in California, civil liberties will be suspended and marshall law declared. There is the possibility that the government would transport millions out of the state to FEMA camps in sparsely populated states - people would have little say in the matter, unless properly connected to the reigning political power structure. America has imposed this chaos on other countries thru our aggressive foreign policy - maybe the karma is getting ready to boomerang?
Remember Blackwater wanting a training facility in east county? Groups like that would take local control, as they would be geared for chaos. The "fair hearings" would be at the end of their guns.

I guess this is the end of Signgate 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Just spotted a shiny new Julie Graboi sign in front of a house on Cornish near H.

I give Julie the benefit of the doubt that she would not knowingly break the rules as she understands them. The only other viable conclusion is that Julie didn't read or understand the rules. Or maybe she's just a little disorganized and unprepared.

      Unethical candidates make unethical representatives.

Julie isn't unethical, she's just unprepared.

Hope you don't have any plans this weekend. There's no telling when Julie might send an urgent email about an important event on short notice.

Only one mayoral candidate has the balls to stand up against waste and stand for residents and her name is Cameron

Graboi's got some cojones as well- she took it to Vina and Barth over Rutan and Tucker and the GPU and 5 stories

  20. 4:09 you have no clue about permitted signage. Now you will. Putting them on private property is allowed by permission of the homeowners. Putting them on public lands close to the roadway property is not allowed.
That is what catherine has done and doesn't seem to care.
Julies' signs will be showing up all over and they will be on homeowners private property by permission. It is as easy as that to understand.
I actually saw one today for catherine that was on a property owners lot so maybe she has gotten the message. If so, good for her but she had to have known better and chose to ignore as others in the past have done.
For those who need to hear it again just to be clear, signs on private property are allowed by permission of the homeowners. Signs close to the public roadway and just off of the property owners lot line are not legal. There you go everybody, now you know. Julie knows this and won't be following catherines' example.
Now have a great weekend and just watch all of Julie's supporters spring up all over town.

Well, ya know, if a candidate can't get the sign rules right and abide by them, what does that say about the candidate's ability to get anything right?

Remember the Joe Corder video of Stocks and Muir putting their signs out the night before the ordinance said it was OK?

    Did that matter to you?

    1. Hey Goober, why should I come up with something different?? Little 'ol Mayberry where the biggest problem was Otis showing up drunk and in Encinitas it's where we put out campaign signs...... Now you head on over to the Panikin and wait an hour for a cup of coffee and some of Aunt Bea's might fine blue berry pie while those of us that understand real life figure out how to fix what YOU FUCK UP.

    2. If you look elsewhere on this blog and on other blogs, I think you'll find many important issues being discussed and solutions being proposed.

Then if you look in the local print media, you'll find news reporting and citizen commentary.

Then if you follow the campaigns, you'll find several people running for office who want to change things for the better, to repair damage that's been done and to set a good course.

Then if you look in your own mind, you'll find mostly vacancy but in the dark recesses you'll find bitterness, cowardice and no effort to do anything that might help.

  22. I think you are right. I like the idea of streetscape, but what is more important is to get a City Manager that leads from the City Council. Not one that leads the City Council- Huge difference.
