Lost Abbey looks to open tasting room in Cardiff

Lost Abbey, the legendary local craft brewer of Belgian-style ales such as Judgment Day and Witch's Wit, is working to open a tasting room in Cardiff:
The new potential tasting room location, located at 2007 San Elijo Avenue in the Cardiff Towne Center Complex (Cardiff’s largest shopping center) will serve as an alternative destination to enjoy The Lost Abbey’s core lineup as well as beers from its award winning barrel-aging program.

Throughout its 8 year history, The Lost Abbey has crafted beers focusing on small batches with unique identities, making the decision to open an intimate space in a community like Cardiff that much easier.

“Cardiff has always been one of my favorite beach communities,” said Director of Brewery Operations Tomme Arthur. “We love its fiercely independent feel and a love of the local beaches makes it a special place for us.”

The construction of the new tasting room location still has several obstacles to overcome. Port Brewing Co / The Lost Abbey will be reaching out to the Cardiff community for support in this venture. The biggest hurdle is the Planning Commission hearing with the City of Encinitas, taking place Thursday, June 19th at 6pm.

The Lost Abbey is encouraging residents of both Cardiff and Encinitas to join us at the meeting (at The Encinitas Civic Center, 505 S. Vulcan Avenue)
to help bring our award-winning beers to their coastal area and along the way, become an additional community center for the neighborhood of Cardiff.

  1. Long overdue for Cardiff to have a class place to get smashed ... I'll drink to this.

  3. Where is the hell are the people going to park? I liver in Cardiff and it is difficult to find parking when it is not summer, and even more difficult to find it in summer. I hope that Planning looks at the parking issue, as there is not a lot of street parking in the area.

  4. Super -- can't wait to be on the road with more drunks.

Where is the study that council asked for to show the breakdown as to what kind of businesses Encinitas already has? I think the bars and drinking establishments are in the lead. This is disgusting.

  5. There is no street parking in that area is more accurate. Drinking never goes out of style. The Lost Abbey dudes are pretty cool, whether this are can absorb the vehicle and people traffic is another issue...

  6. Anyone who has been to that center knows that it is busy. And, almost always full of vehicles. So, are the drinkers going to to the people behind the center like the people do in downtown Encinitas. In Cardiff there is The Office (bar), Wine Steals(sort of a bar) and then we have in the same area about 6 restaurants that all serve alcohol. Do we really want or need this?

  7. Seems like the thing to do is to get drunk, stray drunk, and stay numb. What a waste of life.

    1. But it helps solve Vina's revenue problem, which is really what it's all about.

    2. what will happen to the kids night every Friday or every Friday? That little court yard is great for families- will it be great with a few drunks stumbling about?

Oh, I know, that will never happen. I know, I am projecting.

Encinitas- Party Town for outsiders! Way to go Barth and Shaffer

    3. Yeah way to go. Never elect leaders who don't have kids, they just don't seem to care about families.

    4. The tasting room is tiny- I can't imagine it effecting parking especially on that side of the center... I look forward to having one of the best breweries in the country here in Cardiff. Some of their bottles sell for upwards of $40, at that price it would be hard to get wasted. Party buses will continue to go to the brewery, not a tiny tasting room. I am somehow amazed at the negativity that lives all around Cardiff... I have two kids in Cardiff elementary, and still do not see how this is going to be a bad thing.

  8. This is not a cheap buzz. I think people looking to get smashed already have better options available in Cardiff. This establishment would be a great addition IMO.

As for parking, do we know what business it would replace, and how much parking it used? That shopping center is busy, but I always find parking. If it's in the north alcove, there is street parking through the tunnel to the east.

    1. Remember Yogi's?

Would anyone argue that Lost Abbey is worse than Yogi's from either a parking or drunk impact perspective?

    2. Yogi's was nailed repeatedly for allowing underage drinkers in to the bar, and other violations. I think they were closed for 6 months once.

It's not fair to compare a tasting room for Lost Abbey with a full alcohol bar that was repeatedly nailed for running a disorderly establishment. There's a Stone tasting room in Oceanside, and it's a really cool thing. I've never seen any bad behavior...

  9. I think this will be a great addition to the Center and to Cardiff. I know many people in town are looking forward to their opening.

  10. I think it is totally awesome that Lost Abbey chose Cardiff for their Tasting Room. It will be a great addition to the upscale town center. Can't wait!

  11. 7:35-You state you know many people who look forward to this. About how many is that? I live within walking distance of this center, and I don't know one person who thinks this is a good idea. We all remember Yogis and what a pain in the ass that was.

  12. 11:12 Agree. Big mistake, the plaza is a hit the way it is presently. When the drunks come I'll take my business elsewhere. Last Sat night was lovely with the out of town kids ganged up at E & 101 yelling MF'fer at the top of their lungs. Vina needs to go, enough of his carnage to our downtown.

  13. Speaking of E Street. Does anyone know why the E Street Cafe closed. Some say the owner just walked out and left the door unlocked. Very strange.

    1. Check past files of the UT - they give the story. He was struggling financially with the place, so he decided to close it. He was going to try different commercial venues elsewhere.

Go clutch your pearls Cardiff Temperance League. Some people celebrate the Second Amendment; I'll take the 21st.

Bad behavior should not be tolerated; zero tolerance for DUI.

But I support the right of responsible, friendly adults to enjoy a frosty pint of Judgement Day right after a Cardiff Crack sandwich.
