Surfing Madonna Run

The Surfing Madonna has become so much more than the guerrilla art that captured the imagination of the community. Now the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project is an ongoing charitable organization raising funds to further Mary's mission to Save the Ocean.

The next big event is the October 25 Surfing Madonna Run, a 1K/5K/10K beach run/walk suitable for people of all ages and athletic abilities.

  1. I'd much rather you do a search of the SM foundation and break down its expenses and overhead for us. How much really goes to charitiable works and what works are those and who's pockets are being lined??
As you say in the heading of this blog, the secret life of encinitas.

    1. I'd be happy to break down the cost for you. My name is Bob Nichols and I am the VP and Director of Operations for the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project and Marks buddy who helped him install the Surfing Madonna. Last year the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project made $84,000 most of this money was generated from registered participants from the Surfing Madonna 5K/10K Beach Run/Walk held at Moonlight Beach. The race costs we're $27,000 and change. Gemini Timing cost us $7,000+ Shirts $6,000+ Prize Money $8,000, Insurance $1,500, Life Guards 2,400, Staging, Portapotties, permits another $2,500 for a grand total of about $27,000. Subtract $27,000 from $84,000 and you get $57,000. Of the $57,000 that was left we gave $52,250 back to the Encinitas community. How much have you given back? Of that $52,250, $20,000 went to SDHSA scholarships for kids that are working their ass off to get into college but can't afford it and need some help. These are good kids, that are making a difference in our community and will make some big contributions back to the community some day. $6,250 went to a Marine Mammal Rescue Recovery Cage for the Encinitas Life Guards who needed this to help sick and injured Seals and Sea Lions. $6,000 went to Junior Life Guard Scholarships for 20 disadvantaged kids that come from a bad environment who can't afford to attend. $8,000 went to a Ocean Awareness Walk with Marine Biologist and Oceanographers takes place at Moonlight Beach during the summer months and is completely free. $3,000 went to the Paul Ecke YMCA for special needs programs. Another $8,000 went into fully funding a surf school for special needs children that takes place in La Jolla Shores, the next one is July 19th if you would like to volunteer and help out. I'm guessing you would rather not, I'm assuming your one of those people that just loves to make wonderful things miserable for the rest of us who are trying to make a difference. The rest of the money has been donated into programs like Green Week for kids that are striving to make our oceans and community a cleaner and healthier environment to live in. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at bob@surfingmadonna.org and I would be happy to show you more of what we are doing in the community.

  2. I'm not a fan of this art, but I find it really hard to believe that based on all that has happened in the community over the SM that anyone is making any money off the SM foundation! In my experience, it takes years and years for a non-profit group to become so unwieldy that insiders start to put their hands in the cookie jar -

    2. No one said anything about getting rich - that's your view. I'm referring to expenses (i.e. overstaffing and salaries) of the non-profit becoming so unwieldy that it no longer serves its original purpose.

Now there are non-profits that start off as a scam from day 1 - I seriously doubt this is one of them.

  3. Mark and his Surfing Madonna Foundation partner are not in this for the bucks if you knew anything about them which you obviously don't. But I am sure they would be more than willing to relieve your suspicious tendencies by laying out where the donations go. A little bit of wariness for some non profits is warranted but these guys are caring locals and would never stoop to the depths of using their energies for profiting personally. Thank you Mark.

  4. Mark is one of the good guys. He's using some of the publicity from this art to do some good things.

Save your suspicion for other groups like the United Way or Goodwill. This is not a non-profit designed for high priced ceo's. I would take a look at the CRC locally, and ask them why some of the great longtime workers were let go in recent months under the tenure of new leadership...

  9. 7:55- You are a jerk! 8:10- How is the City going to know anyone's IP address, and if they do, what do you think will happen? Is there a special police force that is going to come to your house and arrest you, torture you, or God only knows what else? I feel that we should have never hired a person as a "communications expert" if this is the bet they can do. But, I am not so paranoid to think that the City will come after anyone. However, I guess it is always a possibility. Just like posting on this blog. They can find your IP address here as well. In fact, I just found 7:55's. Interesting is all I will say.

Or maybe you are unaware that speakers at city hall have been subjected to harassment and increased fees and delays from city staff. Hopefully it never happens to you.

    3. 8:25

That's a strong accusation. Can you offer any tangible proof of this or are you just passing on more speculation from the rumor mill? That is a very paranoid statement that you make. Some might think a little dilusional as well.

  10. Good point. Peak Democracy would identify IP addresses for the city, identifying anyone naughty or nice via cross reference. Santa Clause is comin' to town.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm not 8:17 but I can tell you it is very possible to find IP addresses if you know how to do it. Personally I wouldn't take the time. But, if someone was always belittling my attempts to inform the people on this blog about something, I might think about it. Not saying it happened, just saying it's possible with a little knowledge to get IP addresses even if you are anonymous.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 8:07-I also know it is possible. And, that is why I don't criticize people who post on this blog. I have no idea who most of the people are, therefore, if I know I can find them, they can find me. Am I being paranoid? No, actually in this day and age (think Vilkin), I do it because there may be someone out there who might decide I was worth taking out. Sounds crazy, but a lot of truth to it. The internet is wonderful. However, no one is anonymous, even if you would like to believe that you are. All it takes is a semi-skilled hacker, and he or she can get all of the information they want. For example it didn't take me long to find out that Wc also has other domains, such as Cardiffian, and Encinitas Guerilla. And, I am not even a semi-skilled hacker. Just a person who knows a little about computers. Paranoid, maybe, stupid, no.

  13. 8:07 and 8:33- Just to add credence to the world in the cloud, here is a proposal for using IP addresses, via twitter, etc. for the military use.

    "PI: Michael Macy, Cornell University
With collaborators from: Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory; Morningside Analytics
Government program manager: Dr. Benjamin Knott, Air Force Office of Scientific Research
This proposal focuses on the analysis and empirical modeling of the dynamics of social movement mobilization and contagions. They will evaluate the critical mass (tipping point) model on four datasets of digital traces of social contagions, which include Twitter posts and conversations around the 2011 Egyptian revolution, the 2011 Russian Duma elections, the 2012 Nigerian fuel subsidy crisis and the 2013 Gazi park protests in Turkey. For each dataset, they propose to use information retrieval and sentiment analysis methods to identify individuals mobilized in a social contagion and when they become mobilized. These methods will enable them to construct an “adoption curve” that tracks the number of individuals mobilized in the contagion at any given point in time and to test that curve for presence of the statistical signature of critical mass."
Not that our government would do that to out citizens-right?

    1. My my. What kind of inflated sense of self-importance must one have to feel their rants on a local blog are worthy of tracking and analysis by the government?

Only someone important, special, and dangerous attracts that level of scrutiny. Must be a rush to think oneself worthy of that classification.

Me? I'm just a guy with some opinions about local issues. Sadly, I'm not that important, so I don't worry about being monitored.

    2. 2:28- Just hope you don't have any dirty laundry. In the past, there have been several posts about different people and the stuff the CIty has done do them. I am thinking of Lynn and Russ Marr. They have a huge lien on their home, however, lots of people have accessory units who have not heard a word from code enforcement. So, all I can say is you may not think you are important, but if you cross the wrong people, you may be deluding yourself. Good luck with your lack of self-importance.

      Delete
    3. Wow! There must be a run on tin foil at Vons.

Most home internet connections get dynamically assigned IP addresses. Even so, all the city could do if they had your IP address is discover who your ISP is. They would have to contact the ISP and ask them which of their subscribers are currently assigned the IP address.

It's a lot of hassle and I seriously doubt the city would go through the effort unless there was a criminal investigation.

Since you need to give them your name to create an eTown Hall (Peak Democracy) account, why would they bother about your IP. Sure you could give them a false name but why would you unless you want to act like an asshole on it. Besides, you give your name when speaking to the council.

With all the grief the council gets lately nothing would ever get done if they tried to get everyone. I find this worry about city retribution more of an excuse not be critical in public. It's really just a lack of courage.

In fact, since she is old she probably is not the person that is looking up IP addresses. I doubt if they had computers back in her day. No offense Dr. L.

  18. I think the SM commercialization is a reflection of the SM being in private hands vs the lack of commercial interest in The Kook. The Kook being in quasi- governmental hands the Cardiff Mainstreet association. So there is a Kook run... Big deal. Where are the Kook erasers, bumper stickers, key chains?? Beer bottle openers, socks, t-shirts and Kook underwear and panties??
The Cardiff Kook falls farther behind the SM. Perhaps they should start a semi- religious cult and recruit movie stars to promote The Kook as a deity.

    ReplyDelete
  19. There is a television star on the Kook's base. She is Marion Ross of Happy Days fame. The Kook has received a lot of attention as far away as the NY Times and has become a major tourist attraction in this City. I live close by the Kook and every day I see lots of people checking him or her out. Not so sure the Kook is further behind the SM. There is a calendar that I think Fred Caldwell puts out every year with the best of the Kook outfits. Please correct me if I am wrong Fred. Personally, I love both the Kook and the Surfing Madonna. But, the SM was really made famous by our not so dearly beloved Jerome Stocks. I think we should owe him a debt of gratitude. If it had been left where it was, and Jerome had not become so apoplectic about it, I wonder if there would be as much publicity as there has been.

It has been many years since the Kook showed the original art that made him famous- a few examples

      1. The online Kook dressed as Dan Dalager with a microwave in his hand and a bag of cash in the other- classic political art
      2. Jaws- amazing planning and execution- fins placed strategically throughout the hill on Cardiff over a week or so period moving closer to the Kook before the kook was swallowed up
      3. Jurassic Kook- Taradoctal's cave men with dinosaurs and reptiles of all types- fantastic
      4. Nativity kook- wow, the baby Jesus, the wiseman, the animals, the stable- praise the lord.

  22. According to Logan Jenkins of the UT San Diego, Deputy Mayor Tony Kranz of Encinitas thinks turning the closed, dilapidated, but recently city purchased Pacific View school site in Encinitas into a federal detention center is an idea worth considering. It’s purpose would be to supposedly house a portion of the mass of homeless illegal/undocumented immigrants currently rushing the U.S. southern border. The same ones Escondido recently said “go away” to.

On the plus side, the city of Encinitas hasn’t firmed up its plan to finance the purchase, or it’s plans for future public use of the site, and the feds seem to be seeking detention facilities in North County. And although it would need some dusting off and fixing up, the property is zoned correctly for governmental use as is… I wonder how his fellow Council Members and the general public of Encinitas will feel about his concept?

I guess time will tell!" Logan Jenkins

"Spare Escondido, send kids shelter to Encinitas?"

Tony Kranz said to Logan: “That would be a very interesting twist,” . . . “Thanks for passing the idea along.”

Logan said, "Kranz asked if I wanted `credit' if he brought the notion up for council discussion."

Logan said he wrote [e-mailed] Tony back: “I’m intrigued you’re intrigued,”

Perhaps you 8:36 spent your limited time at the beer garden and failed to see the happiness of this so special community on the green grass area and most were trying to find a place in the shade until the clouds moved in. The "End Bike Lane" left over from the gauntlet days at the north end of Leucadia should be forever removed. The 30 mph sign on Leucadia Blvd by Hygeia St. should not be 10 ft away from a 15 mph sign. And the "Coming Events" banners in LRSP should have a nice permanent framework instead of ever changing, rickety pvc pipe. And the huge LIQUOR sign Leucadia Liquor should forever stay grandfather funky! The city wanted them to take it down years back.
